informational text mandate has been one of the most contentious
elements of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), but it is also one
of its greatest opportunities. Seizing that opportunity means using
informational texts to increase student motivation, engagement, and
cross-disciplinary literacy. To support our students on the PARCC and to
prepare them for college and careers, we must collaborate to harness
the power of informational texts in ways that enrich, not take away from,
the important work that we already do.
Participants will learn how to:
--Find high-quality, engaging informational texts that are deeply and meaningfully connected to your existing curriculum.
--Create vocabulary activities that support student success with informational texts.
--Collaborate with cross-content colleagues to establish ways to support each other in this work on an ongoing basis.
--Create reading activities that build student confidence when tackling challenging informational texts.
writing and discussion activities that make meaningful connections
between informational texts and existing instructional units and enhance
student subject-area knowledge and critical thinking skills
